Dirt Tea FAQs
What is Dirt Tea?
Dirt Tea is a premium, all-natural compost tea blend designed to wake up your soil. We’ve packed worm castings, kelp, and essential minerals into a mess-free tea bag. You brew it, your plants drink it, and the microbes do the rest.
Is it a fertilizer?
Technically, it is a biological soil amendment. While it does contain nutrients, its primary job is to deliver millions of beneficial microbes that unlock nutrients already in your soil. Think of it as a "probiotic" for your plants rather than a chemical vitamin.
Does it smell?
Not like traditional manure! When brewing, it has a very mild, earthy scent—similar to a forest floor after it rains. Because it’s a clean "mess-free" steep, it is perfectly suited for indoor use without stinking up your home.
How do I use it?
Drop one tea bag into 8–15L of water. Steep for 12–24 hours, give the bag a gentle squeeze to release the goodness, and feed your plants!
What is "Rip and Flip"?
Once you’re done brewing, don’t throw the bag away! Rip the tea bag open and Flip the wet contents directly onto the soil of your favorite plant or into your compost bin. The solids are pure gold for your garden.
Do I really need to let city water sit out for 24 hours?
If your city uses chlorine, letting the water sit out for 24 hours (or bubbling it) helps the chlorine evaporate, which is better for the living microbes. If your city uses chloramine, it won't evaporate. In that case, just brew as usual—Dirt Tea is resilient, and some microbes are better than none!
Do I need an air pump or a brewer?
Nope! We designed Dirt Tea to be a "passive steep." While you can use an air pump to further oxygenate the water, it isn't necessary for a successful batch.
Can I make a stronger batch?
For a "super-concentrated" dose, you can steep the bag in as little as 2–4L of water. This is great for older plants that need a boost, but for regular maintenance, 8–15L is the sweet spot.
How far does one tea bag go?
One brewed batch typically covers:
- 6 to 10 small pots (6–8 inch)
- 3 to 5 medium pots (10–12 inch)
- 2 to 4 large patio planters
20 to 40 sq ft when used as a soil drench in garden beds
Can I use it on all plants?
Pretty much! From monsteras and fiddly ferns to outdoor tomatoes and cannabis. If it grows in soil, it will benefit.
Can I use it on succulents?
Absolutely! Succulents love the gentle nutrient boost. Just ensure you aren't overwatering—use the tea during your succulents' regular watering schedule.
Can I use it on seedlings?
Yes! Seedlings love the gentle biology. It helps build a strong root system early on without the risk of "burning" delicate stems with chemicals
Can I use it on lawns?
You can. Apply it as a soil drench where possible. While many lawn users prefer hose-end sprayers for ease, Dirt Tea is truly optimized for garden beds, containers, and houseplants where you can really target the root zone.
Can I use it a foliar spray?
Absolutely. Many gardeners swear by foliar feeding. Microbes can help protect the leaf surface. Avoid spraying in direct, mid-day sun to prevent leaf scorch.
When will I see results?
Microbiology is a "long game." While some notice perkier leaves within a week, the real magic happens over 2 to 4 weeks as the microbes transform the soil structure and nutrient availability.
What results should I expect?
Expect more vibrant leaf colour, increased flower/fruit production, and better resilience against stress (like heat or underwatering)
Is Dirt Tea a pesticide?
No. Dirt Tea is not a pesticide or fungicide. However, a plant with a healthy "immune system" and a diverse microbial colony is naturally better at warding off pests and diseases on its own.
What is Dirt Tea NOT?
It is not a "miracle chemical" that provides an artificial growth spurt followed by a crash. It is also not a replacement for basic needs like light and water.
How long do the dry bags last?
When stored in a cool, dry place, our tea bags remain shelf-stable for up to 2 years. Keep the pouch sealed to protect the ingredients from moisture.
Is it safe for pets and children?
Yes! Dirt Tea is 100% organic and non-toxic. However, it is a soil amendment, not a beverage—please keep it out of reach and ensure it isn't consumed by humans or pets.
Why compost tea?
Raw compost is heavy and messy. Compost tea "unlocks" the beneficial biology and soluble nutrients, allowing you to deliver them directly to the roots in an immediately available form.
Is compost tea real or "faulty science"?
It is very real! Soil microbiology is a massive field of agricultural science. Dirt Tea uses a lab-tested, stabilized blend of ingredients to ensure every bag is teeming with the right kind of life.
