Tap Water and Compost Tea: What Actually Matters
The short answer: Municipal water may contain chlorine or chloramine to keep drinking water safe. Chloramine is more stable and does not quickly dissipate by standing. That does not mean ordinary tap water is “killing your soil.” For most home growers, potable tap water is practical. If you want to remove disinfectant from steeping water, first check what your municipality uses and choose a treatment designed for it.
Water advice online gets dramatic quickly. I have seen tap water blamed for nearly every disappointing garden result.
That is too simple. Water chemistry varies by municipality, and plants also respond to light, drainage, salts, pH, temperature, soil and care. The useful question is not whether tap water is good or bad. It is whether anything in your water is relevant to the way you are using it.
Chlorine and chloramine are there for a reason
Municipal systems disinfect drinking water to control harmful organisms. Some use free chlorine. Others use chloramine, which is formed by combining chlorine and ammonia and lasts longer in distribution pipes.
Ottawa uses free chlorine during purification and chloramine in the distribution system. The City's municipal well systems use free chlorine. Your location may be different, so check the current water-quality information from your own utility.
Letting water sit is not a universal fix
Free chlorine can dissipate from standing water, although the time depends on concentration, container shape, temperature and other conditions. Chloramine is more stable and does not rapidly disappear simply because a bucket sits overnight.
That means the common advice to “leave every bucket out for a few hours” is incomplete. It may reduce free chlorine, but it is not a reliable chloramine treatment.
Activated carbon products may reduce chlorine, while chloramine removal requires a filter or conditioner specifically rated for it. Follow the manufacturer's directions. I would not recommend guessing at treatment chemicals or crushing tablets into plant water without knowing the water volume and product instructions.
Is tap water harming your plants?
Often, no. Many people maintain healthy houseplants and gardens with municipal water.
In containers, a more common water-related problem is the gradual buildup of dissolved salts, especially when pots never drain freely. White crust on the pot or soil surface, browned leaf edges and declining growth can be clues. Periodically watering thoroughly and allowing excess to drain can help flush accumulated salts, provided the plant and potting mix tolerate it.
Some sensitive plants may respond to particular minerals or fluoride. If one species struggles while the rest are fine, look up that plant's requirements before blaming all tap water.
What water should you use for Dirt Tea?
Use clean, potable water and clean equipment. Rainwater can be useful when it is collected and stored safely. Well water avoids municipal disinfectants but may have its own mineral profile. Filtered water is only as effective as the filter's actual specifications.
For most beginners, I would start with the water they normally use successfully on their plants. If results are poor, check the whole routine before making water treatment the first expense.
This is the honest counterargument: optimizing water can become a distraction. Correcting a dark location, a pot with no drainage or chronic overwatering will usually matter more.
A practical decision tree
- Find your municipality's current water-quality page.
- Confirm whether it uses chlorine, chloramine or another system.
- If your plants are healthy, keep the routine simple.
- If you suspect water issues, check drainage, salt buildup and species sensitivity.
- If you filter, use a product explicitly rated for the disinfectant you have.
- Change one variable and observe for several weeks.

Tap water is not the enemy. Safe drinking water treatment is important, and the effect of that water in a garden is more nuanced than a scary headline suggests.
