Alfalfa Meal for Soil: Why It Is in Dirt Tea

The short answer: Alfalfa meal is dried, ground plant material used as an organic amendment and nitrogen source. Its nutrients are released through decomposition, so it is not an instant plant rescue. Dirt Tea uses a measured amount as one part of a broader blend.

Alfalfa is familiar as an animal feed and cover crop. In the garden, meal or pellets are also used as plant-based organic material.

What it contributes

Oregon State University research on organic fertilizer materials found that alfalfa meal contained nitrogen and decomposed over time. Temperature, moisture, soil organisms and particle size all affect how quickly organic nutrients become available.

That is different from a soluble fertilizer designed for rapid, known delivery.

Why it is in the formula

I wanted a plant-based component alongside castings, kelp, fish bone, rock dust and humic acid. Alfalfa meal adds organic material and a slow nutrient contribution without making the formula depend on a single ingredient.

Claims about specific growth hormones in a finished watering can are harder to support. I would rather explain the basic role than promise a measured biological response we have not tested.

When another tool is better

If a plant has a confirmed nitrogen deficiency and needs a fast correction, a labelled fertilizer may be more predictable. If outdoor soil already tests well, adding more inputs simply because they are organic is not automatically beneficial.

The counterargument is healthy: “natural” does not mean unlimited, and slow release does not mean precisely timed.
